Universal Marking Inc. has provided precision part marking services since 1975, serving aerospace, military, medical, and industrial customers nationwide. Since 1975, our ITAR-compliant engraving shop has executed complex part-marking specifications, including precise engraving on hardened steel, to ensure absolute traceability. Learn more about how our laser engraver technology works, specific laser engraving applications, and our extensive material capabilities below.
What is Laser Engraving?
Laser engraving is a non-contact marking process in which a CNC-controlled laser beam, measuring as small as 0.002 in. in diameter, removes material to a specified depth along a programmed path. In many industrial applications, the distinction between laser engraving and laser etching is primarily based on mark depth. Marks deeper than 0.002 in. are classified as engraved, while shallower marks are classified as etched.
Our industrial laser engraver directs focused energy at the exact substrate surface. The raw material absorbs the energy, vaporizes, and is immediately expelled. This precise physical reaction leaves a permanent mark. Because the beam never physically touches the part, the process applies zero mechanical stress. Operators eliminate cutter pressure, die impact, and any risk of workpiece deformation.
This non-contact method excels when parts require deep, high-contrast marks (exceeding 0.030″ in some cases) but cannot withstand the heavy stress of mechanical engraving or impression stamping. Thin-walled aerospace parts and delicate finished assemblies benefit immensely from this controlled approach.
Benefits of Laser Engraving
Engineers and procurement teams evaluating marking methods typically compare laser engraving against mechanical processes based on strict tolerances, cycle times, and part compatibility.
In a production environment, our laser engraver equipment delivers several distinct advantages:
- Tight location and depth tolerances. We position and control marks to extremely tight specifications. This precision matters immensely when mark placement affects part function or regulatory standards.
- Fast cycle times. Part-to-part variation remains extremely low, allowing the first mark in a batch to maintain the same quality and precision as the final mark.
- Consistent repeatability. Part-to-part variation remains extremely low, allowing the first mark in a batch to maintain the same quality and precision as the final mark.
- No mechanical stress. We safely mark finished surfaces, delicate coatings, anodized layers, and heat-treated substrates without causing surface damage.
- Direct customization. We engrave complex artwork, corporate logos, serial numbers, data matrix codes, and text directly from your CAD files without requiring custom tooling.
Laser Engraving Applications
Demanding laser engraving applications span nearly every major heavy industry we serve.
Common deployment sectors include:
- Aerospace and defense. Turbine blades, landing gear components, actuators, and aerospace fasteners carry permanent identification marks per strict specifications like SAE AS478, MIL-STD-130, and Parker Aerospace BPS 4106.
- Medical equipment. Surgical instruments, specialized implants, and medical device housings require biocompatible marks that survive repeated autoclave sterilization cycles.
- Automotive and industrial. Heavy brackets, control switches, and machinery components rely on these durable marks for lifecycle traceability.
- Sports and fitness. We routinely execute custom sports applications, including engraving complex knurling patterns onto steel barbells, marking specialized kettlebells for corporate fitness challenges, and etching custom seating and locker tags for major professional sports leagues.
Our Laser Engraving Services
We operate as a fully registered ITAR-compliant engraving shop. Defense and aerospace customers trust our facility to handle controlled technical data and strict export-controlled hardware. Furthermore, our AS9003 approval supports the rigorous quality management requirements of aerospace manufacturing.
Our extensive material compatibility includes:
- Metals. Aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, brass, carbide, platinum, silver, copper, mild steel, and precision engraving on hardened steel.
- Non-Metals. Heavy plastics, glass, wood, cork, and leather.
We routinely mark heat-treated, anodized, painted, coated, and light-sensitive substrates. Our standard work envelope accommodates part sizes ranging from 0.020″ miniature components up to 8-foot assemblies.
Types of Laser Engraving Processes
Laser engraving falls under a broader set of part marking methodologies we handle completely in-house:
- Laser Etching. Shallow marks (0.002 in. or less) engineered for high-resolution graphics and matrix codes.
- Laser Engraving. Deeper marks (0.003 in. to 0.040 in.) engineered for heavy durability and visual contrast.
For specific applications where a laser is not the optimal fit, we also perform Vibro Peening, CNC Engraving, Pantograph Engraving, 3D Engraving, Diamond Scribing, and Dot Matrix Marking. View our full services page to compare methodologies.
